Catocala cara is a large underwing. The hindwing fringe is off-white and heavily checked with black along the veins. The ground colour of the forewings is grayish-purple with gray-green mottling and sharply defined black postmedial and antemedial lines that extend from the costa downwards to mid-wing.

The undersides are not nearly as spectacular. The apex of all wings is darker than that of most other species.

I wonder if there is any technique for cleaning the proboscis before it recoils to its resting place below the head.

These moths seem to fly consistently with their legs apparently ready for landing.
