Sphingidae of Brazil

Xylophanes tersa, Itanhandu, Minas Gerais, Brazil,
courtesy of Larry Valentine.

Although I believe these "tribal" checklists contain only species within Brazil, I fully expect there are omissions. If you have corrections to offer, please contact
Bill Oehlke at oehlkew@islandtelecom.com.

I am most thankful to Jean Haxaire for sending me an electronic copy of Faune de Bolivie, Lépidoptères Sphingidae, Ecologie et systématique.

I used his checklist and compared it to publications for Venezuela to come up with this list.

Those species listed are found in both Venezuela and Bolivia or have Brazil as the specimen type locality or are generally well known to fly in Brazil.

Species with a black * after them are confirmed by Catarina da Silva Motta from extensive collecting in northern Brazil. I am very thankful to her for extensive research and reports she has sent to me.

A red * indicates a new species or a species confirmed by specimen type locality, but not listed on Catarina's checklists for northern Brazil. Many of these species may be from southern Brazil.

A green ? indicates no confirmed records. The species may or may not fly in Brazil.

Eurides Furtado offers corrections to my previous listings: Manduca violaalba flies in Brazil and is quite distinct from Manduca incisa. Perigonia ilus also flies in Brazil and is not a subspecies of Perigonia lusca. Manduca manducoides has also been added to the list.

Eurides has provided the following information with beautiful images:

Perigonia leucopus Rothschild & Jordan, 1910. Male. Flies in Mato Grosso State, Brazil.
Nyceryx furtadoi Haxaire, 1996. Pair. Flies in Brazil in States Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

Manduca manducoides (Rothschild, 1894). Pair. Flies in Brazil in States Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo.
Manduca violaalba (B. P. Clark, 1922). Male. Flies in Brazil in States Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

It is also suspected that the following species may range into Bolivia, and, for that reason, may also fly in Brazil:

Euryglottis davidianus Dognin, 1891
