Pachysphinx modesta
Modest Sphinx or Poplar Sphinx

Pachysphinx modesta June 9, 2004, Hampshire County, Massachusetts,
courtesy of Barbara Spencer.

This large sphinx is distinct from all other eastern species. In the western United States and Canada, however, it is very similar to Pachysphinx occidentalis.

The pale, irregular, diffuse line in the basal area of the forewing helps to identify this species. In P. occidentalis the same line is dark and much less diffuse.

The left forewing of this specimen has been digitally "repaired".
