TAXONOMY: Family: Sphingidae, Latreille, 1802 Subfamily: Sphinginae, Latreille, [1802] Tribe: Sphingini, Latreille, 1802 Genus: Manduca Hubner, [1807] ........... Species: fosteri (Rothschild & Jordan, 1906)

DISTRIBUTION:

Manduca fosteri flies in
Paraguay (specimen type locality);
southern Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul: Hamburgo Velho; and
north eastern Argentina: Misiones (LA).

Manduca grandis is no longer recognized as a valid species. The original specimen labelled as grandis turned out to be a female fosteri which flies in Paraguay and southern Brazil.

FLIGHT TIMES:

Manduca fosteri adults fly in December in Misiones, Argentina (LA).

ECLOSION:

Pupae probably wiggle to surface from subterranean chambers just prior to eclosion.

SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call in the males with a pheromone released from a gland at the tip of the abdomen. Adults take nectar from flowers.
