DISTRIBUTION:

Manduca janira (wingspan: approximately 99-114mm) flies in southern and southeastern Brazil (specimen type locality: Rio de Janeiro), and into Paraguay.

This species is very similar to Manduca brasiliensis, but janira has "more prominently variegated basal and apical areas, and the hindwing upperside has grey bands tinted with yellow." BOLD

FLIGHT TIMES:

Manduca janira adults fly in October and probably in other months.

ECLOSION:

Pupae probably wiggle to surface from subterranean chambers just prior to eclosion.

SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call in the males with a pheromone released from a gland at the tip of the abdomen. Adults take nectar from flowers.
