TAXONOMY:

Family: Sphingidae, Latreille, 1802
Subfamily: Macroglossinae, Harris, 1839
Tribe: Dilophonotini, Burmeister, 1878
Genus: Pachygonidia Fletcher, 1982 ...........
Species: caliginosa Boisduval, 1870

DISTRIBUTION:

Pachygonidia caliginosa, (wingspan: males: ; females: 70mm), flies in
Brazil: Para; Mato Grosso (EF); southern Maranhao;
Bolivia: La Paz (750-1200m);
French Guiana;
Colombia: Meta: Villavicencio (GN); and
Venezuela: Bolivar: Suapure (CATE). It probably also flies in Guyana and Suriname.

The forewing is very similar to that of Pachygonidia subhamata, but the apex is pointed (not sinuate between Rs3 and Rs4, i.e. not dentate at the end of Rs4). The outer margin is slightly angulate at the bottom of the hollowed out region below the apex, not as rounded (convex) as in subhamata or mielkei.

Hindwing upperside has two median transverse pinkish-buff bands, similar to the patterns of Pachygonidia mielkei and Pachygonidia subhamata. CATE
