Louisiana Insects

Vernon Antoine Brou Jr., Winner of the 2000 John Abbott Award, specializes in moths from the state of Louisiana and has designed and operated a series of light traps nearly every night since 1969. He currently has a scientific collection of about 350,000 Louisiana insect specimens in approximately 600 cornel-size drawers. In addition, Vernon has officially donated over 169,000 insects to numerous institutions.

Vernon Antoine Brou, Jr., January 14, 2007

Vernon has been collecting insects for 50 years and has published 149 entomological articles over 37 years. The largest investigation involved the Sphingidae of Louisiana, a 30-year study (1970-1999) in which he reported the capture of 83,889 specimens representing 46 species, published in the Journal of the Lepidopterists Society.

Several of Vernon's articles can be accessed via the Southern Lepidopterist Society newsletters.

During his many discoveries he has described one new Saturnidae: Automeris louisiana Ferg. & Brou, two new sphingidae: Manduca wellingi Brou and Lapara phaeobrachycerous Brou and four new noctuidae: Catocala atocala Brou, Catocala charlottae Brou, Catocala umbrosa Brou and Chaetaglaea fergusoni Brou, and others.

Vernon is a member in good standing of the Lepidopterist Society, Southern Lepidopterist Society, Entomological Society of Washington, Research Associate for the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, and has served on the Insect Advisory Consortium for Audubon Institute.

Vernon has been honored by his colleagues by having five species named after him (patranyms):
Eupithecia broui Rindge, “Geometridae”
Dichrorampha broui E.C. Knudson “Tortricidae”
Bagisara brouana Ferguson “Noctuidae”
