William Henry Edwards
(1822-1909)

William Henry Edwards, a native of the Kanawha County community of Coalburg, West Virginia, was a renowned entomologist, naturalist and explorer who led an important expedition into the Amazon in 1846. He was the author of Butterflies of North America and A Voyage Up the River Amazon.

Edwards departed significantly from the "love/marriage" theme in naming/describing nine Catocala species: similis, serena, subnata, nebulosa, minuta, briseis, californica, gracilis and marmorata. He also named subspecies andromedae tristis , "parvula" as a form of minuta and walshii for previously described junctura.
