Male: CECROPIA (m) x GLOVERI (f)

Gloveri x Cecropia courtesy of Andrew Spicer.

Bill,
I thought that you might like to see this Hyalophora trio that (the hybrid male-center) I generated from a cecropia x gloveri hybrid pairing last year. Of 25 hybrids that eclosed, all had the fused stripes on the forewing. Quite striking. Otherwise, the hybrids (male-middle) simply differed in the background color of the wing, from a gray to a rust brown color. Unfortunately, I have not managed to get any of the hybrids to pair up....very frustrating!

It is not difficult to get the Hyalophora species to hybridize, but subsequent females tend to be barren, without ova. The males, however, are capable of fertilizing females sometimes producing interesting intergrades.

N.B.: Andrew obtained the hybrid specimens from a male cecropia and female gloveri pairing. In the above image a female cecropia and a male gloveri are depicted for comparison.

If members have images of species not currently depicted on this site, I would love to receive electronic images. I have software that enables me to cut and paste wings into a more natural pose on foliage. I can also touch up wing tears, pinholes, etc. Below is Andrew's hybrid composited by Bill Oehlke.
