Female: GLOVERI (m) x CECROPIA (f)

Gloveri x Cecropia courtesy of Scott Smith.

Hi Bill,

Here is a nice moth, this female emerged today. She is a result of a hybrid pairing between a female Hylophora cecropia from Great Mills Maryland and a male Hylophora gloveri from Copper Canyon Arizona July 28th, 2000. The larva were reared on Prunus Pennsylvania (Wild Cherry).

This female looks fat and full of ova but she is not; she is void of ova and sterile. The resulting female shown looks much like a typical Hylophora euryalus with additional red in the wings.

Scott

It is not difficult to get the Hyalophora species to hybridize, but subsequent females tend to be barren, without ova. The males, however, are capable of fertilizing females sometimes producing interesting intergrades.
