Larva: Citheronia regalis (m) x Citheronia splendens sinaloensis (f)

Citheronia regalis x Citheronia splendens courtesy of Ty Clark.

Here is a 5th instar pic of one of my three regalis x splendens that actually survived. For some reason they grew well until about the 3rd instar and then just seemed to stop eating. Three actually made it to pupation, although they were smaller than a straight up regalis, probably 4.5". The pupae seem healthy and active so I have them in the basement hoping they'll make it through the winter.

The larvae were identical to splendens up until the 5th instar. I was disappointed because I thought for a while that I didn't get a real cross mating. But in the 5th instar you can clearly see the splendens body and the regalis horns. They also seem much darker than a splendens with deep red marking on their prolegs.
