Male: Samia cynthia (m) x Callosamia promethea (f)

Samia cynthia pairing with Callosamia promethea courtesy of Bruce Passarelli.

Bruce photographed this pairing in 2004. The female deposited about thirteen eggs, none of which hatched, and then died.

Five or six years ago, I had a pairing of a male polyphemus with a female luna. The female only deposited about half dozen eggs and then died prematurely.

Perhaps, in such pairings, there is something in the mix of seminal fluid with "egg glue" that causes coagulation and binding???

More likely there is some rupturing in the female, restricting her and causing premature death.

Ric Peigler, in his A Revision of the Silkmoth Genus Samia has an image of a beautiful hybrid male between a Samia cynthia female and a Callosamia promethea male.
