DISTRIBUTION:

Protambulyx astygonus (Wing span: approximately 100mm) flies in
Bolivia: Santa Cruz;
Paraguay: Paraguari; Amambay; Canindeyu; and
Brazil: Minas Gerais.

"P. astygonus is very similar in external appearance to P. goeldii. However, the two species can easily be distinguished by the presence of a prominent dark spot at the apex of the forewing discal cell in P. goeldii that is missing in P. astygonus."

FLIGHT TIMES:

Protambulyx astygonus adults fly in October in Bolivia. In Paraguay there are records for June so there are probably at least two broods. The Minas Gerais image is from November.

ECLOSION:

Pupae probably wiggle to surface from subterranean chambers just prior to eclosion.

SCENTING AND MATING:

Females call in the males with a pheromone released from a gland at the tip of the abdomen.
